I found this on glide magazine.Grateful Dead Unseals Three From The Vault
From the Better Late Than Never department comes the news that the Grateful Dead will finally be releasing Three From The Vault. In typical stoner fashion, Three From The Vault comes nearly 15 years after the release of Two From The Vault. Three From The Vault, the Dead’s second release on Rhino, will feature music from February 19th, 1971 at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY.

2/19/71 is the first show the Grateful Dead played after Mickey Hart left the band, and I personally prefer the Dead with one drummer. The music from late ‘71 until Hart’s return in ‘74 is much more loose and free-flowing with Billy Kreutzman leading the charge by his lonesome. Highlights from Three From The Vault include a nasty Easy Wind and the first-ever Bird Song. Members of the audience at this show participated in a kooky experiment called ESP and the Dream. Craisins.

What will be interesting to see is how good this show will sound. We don’t know how you can improve upon the quality of the crispy betty board that circulates both among tapers and on the Live Music Archive. Three From The Vault hits stores on June 26th — look for Four From The Vault in 2023.

this choice is tragically lame...if they felt absolutely compelled to go with a 1971 show why not something cool like 12-05-1971 or something...brutal...somebody needs to have their bong revoked...

for those who want it.

Not much of a surprise, but I'll buy a copy!

Even though GDP should give me one for free since I was at the show and paid for my ticket which gives me unlimited rights to download what I want when I want no matter what. So there.

It's not my intention to bitch- this band has given us way too many great releases and freebies over the years to justify any serious griping- but for the life of me I just cannot understand the thinking behind this release. As I and many others have noted in previous threads, this was a very chaotic and uneven run of shows, what with Mickey splitting and all the new material being introduced. Plus, the entire run has been well circulated in high quality for quite some time now. I would have even preferred a "best of the run" set as opposed to one night, as I don't think any of these nights is especially strong as an entire show. I'm sure I'll pony up (I try to buy most of the 'official' releases to keep the program moving along) but I just think the choice is a tad underwhelming, an uninspiring selection from a less than stellar era.

Pardon me if I am wrong (at least 50-50), but aren't the best tapes from 2-19 in mono? With glitches? And reel noise? I suspect they are digitally restored and remixed from the original 16 track. Now, mind you, yep, we already have copies; but I love that time zone and am thrilled to see this night come out at last (it was supposed to be three from the vault years ago!). Plus, it signals the beginning of what I hope will be many more to come.

Yeah, it would also be nice to have something new--but what's left that is worthwhile--it's ALL been released!

Yes, the notes say the Betty Cantor SBD (her 2nd taping) is in mono. You can find the matrix (Sick Bits 13) here:

The extra energy of the crowd makes it a fun listen!

Excuse me for maybe being a little bit daft and out of touch here but isn't the vault series VIDEO. The key word here being the video and if my conclusion is correct sign me up because in my experience video along with the music is as close as you get to actually being at a show and well worth 30 bucks for me anyway no matter what show it is being as Dead starved as I am.

I agree- bad choice. Even I have had this one on tape or CD for years, and I rarely listen to pre-80s GD. You'd think they'd pick some random show that doesnt have a good bootleg recording cirulating so the we would be curious to hear what it sounded like and how good it was, instead of picking a show they hope we think is good enough to spend $30 on just to get a slightly better sounding copy. I'm thinking these Rhino people dont have their finger on the pulse of current GD fan listening inclinations.

If it's good quality and good performance, it's technically good for a release. But why choose a show that everyone already has? Not good business decision. But my gripe is that it's not a smoker from the 80s or 90s with all kinds of technology and stuff.

well i don't have it and i would rather have the vault copy ...as most of the old stuff i have is official released material....alot of the 80's and some 90's is avail on bt sites in excellent quality ....so i have no problem with the old stuff coming out ..especially if it's an upgrade over what's already out there...

Hey Pat--I would beg to differ on the business decision aspect. And I think this is why the 'don't steal our music complaints' don't hold up on this one issue: everyone, and I mean everyone that has a copy of the original is always willing to buy a cleaned up release. I have read it here many times, and have asked many over the years about it, and never, ever have met a head that said, 'oh, I have a tape of that, so I won't buy it.' Rich or poor, they want the official, cleaned, clear as can be release.

Now, I agree--not sure this is the right show...but I have said that about many releases...

I hate to say this *gulp* but being that I have had it forever I probably won't buy it. I would have gone more for a best of run. If it had been the 73 Winterland I would have even though I have that one too.

Two things that I WILL always buy are

a) tickets to see any band involving any member of the Grateful Dead, especially Ratdog - but none of them ever come up here : (

b) VIDEO - why the hell won't they just release it all already?

not sure about that man - a damn good sbd in my collection vs 30 bucks or whatever for the release - i can see my 30 goin elsewhere

i agree with some others on the board - they need to get a clue and release some stuff that "we" don't already have pristine versions of. 'cleaned up' means nothing to me - a good board is alredy cleaned up in my mind

i'll pass on this one to be honest - just like the cow palace release - have it, done that, give me something different - or i'll spend my money elsewhere

Damn...first JOTS, and now you...so much for my highly objective scientific studies.

Oh well...maybe's cause I have all the early stuff, and even the best SBDs often have a few cuts and glitches, and other flaws...EG, as good as they are, none of my Aug 68 SBDs or even famous Oct Avalon shows surpass the Two from the Vault release, and I would blow the $$ on ANY 68 or 69 show that came out; even the amazing quality version I have of 9-19-70 would be quickly replaced.

Love the little pics and liner notes too.

Unfortunately, or fortuantely!, the Vault series are being taken from multitrack tapes. I think that the criteria in part is: multitrack, complete, and great. The other stuff should come out as DP's.--and I'd love to see them crank those out.

As far as the choice goes--we'd all love stuff from our favorite time zones! Maybe some of that spring 1990 tour? That was multi track. Or a complete show from the Warfield/Radio City run?

I agree that it meets the technical requirements. I just feel that it's almost certain that tastier multitrack selections exist. The existing Bettys are by no means the best BBs in circulation, but they're certainly good enough that a sonic upgrade alone isn't enough to get me excited about this release (there is a cut in Bird Song and a few other bits of weirdness here and there; nothing major). I'm sure that for some Deadhead, somewhere, this represents the absolute apex of the band's archival releases, but since I'm not him, I'm left scratching my head.
